The book follows the epiphany of Malka Germania, a female redeemer figure, in five chapters whose layout is modeled on that of the Talmud, the central text in Rabbinical Judaism. This organization reflects the polyphonic complexity, rich nuance, and ambivalence that the work casts into visuals and underscores that there is no simple answer. The book includes an interview with the artist and contributions by Sami Berdugo, Christina von Braun, Michael Brenner, Max Czollek, and others. It is published on occasion of the exhibition Yael Bartana—Redemption Now at the Jewish Museum Berlin.

The book returns to the origins of photography to meditate upon its future. 
Gershuni traveled to the home of photography’s inventor, William Henri Fox Talbot, in Lacock, England, where he photographed Talbot’s home and its environs. Gershuni transformed his digital camera into a pin-hole, producing long exposures that resulted re-capture a materiality eluded by the reproducibility’ of digital photography. Gershuni’s frames capture elements of surprise – stains of light – amongst other motifs, that resemble the remains of some invisible ghost. Interspersed amongst these grainy epitaphs are a series of nude photographs featuring a young man posing in a stark room. We know nothing about him, or of his relationship to the images that surround him, other then that he goes by the name Bambi. Regardless, there is a strong dialogue between Gershuni’s subject and the barrenness of Lacock, one that enhances the eroticism of this strangers presence.

At the end of his remarkable film Dr. Strangelove, Stanley Kubrick foresaw a post-apocalyptic future in which dominant alpha males would repopulate the Earth, with ten women assigned to every man. Commissioned by MIF festival, Bartana’s performance presents the opposite scenario – placing women in charge of a world in desperate need of a new vision. In a war room, a group of 10 women is confronted by some of the urgent crises of our time, as the clock ticks…

The poster series and typography system designed for this performance are inspired by the theatrical yet realistically horrifying scenario portrayed in the worlds of Kubrick and Bartana. Inspired by cold war propaganda posters, the series of posters refer to the urgent crises of our time (climate change, military escalation, mass migration).

The exceptional quality of Aton lies in its productiondevelopment: there is an impressive effort invested
in the production and processing to achieve the best quality of fabrics possible. There is a very technical, scientific use of knowledge and skill to create a special physical experience in wearing Aton. 
Consequently, the visual identity of Aton follows a minimalist, clean and determined approach. It is bold in its execution and attention to detail, but it is not loud – it is refined. 
The identity relies on a minimalist usage of muted colours and sans serif typography. It also makes use of recurring key graphic elements: the photographs of folded clothes and the shape of a triangle as cut-out. These key elements represent the idea of the worlds that can be created with clothes in general, and Aton’s specific way of working with textiles in particular.

Conceived by Yael Bartana, “Bury Our Weapons, Not Our Bodies!” is a public performance that challenges systems of violence and displacement through a symbolic burial and a call to action. The performance took place in front of the Philadelphia Museum of Art and was the basis of “The Undertakers”, Bartana’s exhibition from 2019 (Capitain Petzel Gallery, Berlin).
The shield-shaped-masks were designed for the visual identity of Bartana’s exhibition in the museum and were used as prominent protest signs during the protest-performance.

New visual identity, logo and layout design for Adam Tsait (“Young Man” in Hebrew), an Israeli magazine for kids. The new logo combines Cursive and Block type (sans-Serif), setting the tone for a playful layout that features different key illustrators for each issue.

The Jewish Museum Berlin presented Yael Bartana – Redemption Now. This large-scale solo exhibition of the contemporary artist Yael Bartana investigated the power of imagination and art’s redemptive potential. For more than twenty years, Bartana has been inquiring into grand historical narratives that help to constitute national and other collective identities.

The show brought together more than fifty early and more recent works, including video installations, photographs, and neon works.
The exhibition followed an eschatological topos – the recurring idea that a leader may bring salvation – and its deconstruction. At the core of the show was the commissioned video work Malka Germania&#38;nbsp;(Hebrew for “Queen Germania”), which Bartana conceived for the Jewish Museum and produced at historically charged locations across Berlin.

An androgynous savior figure comes to the German capital. Her journey floods the city with scenes from an imagined collective unconscious; past and future merge in an alternative present. The installation’s theme of collective redemption addressed traumata, hopes of salvation, and the desire for change.

Following the success of the performance at the MIF festival, Yael Bartana’s performance was invited to Berlin’s Volksbühne in 2018. 

The visual language for Berlin performances is inspired by war games, starring Fat Man and Little Boy, and the big question - are we getting closer and closer to doomsday?
